In a Foreign Land

The current financial crisis in Spain has forced many young people to emigrate in the hope of finding a better life. Edinburgh is one of the most popular destinations and the city is home to more than 20,000 Spanish people. In 'In a Foreign Land', award-winning Spanish filmmaker Icíar Bollaín follows Spanish ex-pats as they build new lives and search for new opportunities. One of them is Gloria, a teacher from Spain who works in Edinburgh as a shop assistant. Gloria decided to create the collective “Ni perdidos ni callados” (Neither lost nor silent) to express the anger and frustration felt by many Spaniards who have moved to Scotland’s capital. 'In a Foreign Land' was presented last month at the San Sebastian Film Festival and is a UK premiere.

**The ESFF is excited to welcome the director of 'In a Foreign Land', Icíar Bollaín, who will discuss her film and answer some questions from the audience.
